Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: The Antioch Rescue Squad, a long-standing volunteer organization that served the community since 1938, has officially disbanded and donated over $491,000 in remaining funds to local entities. The decision was announced by village officials on Tuesday, marking the end of an era for the once-revered group. The donation is split evenly between two groups: the village of Antioch and the First Fire Protection District will receive $245,746, while several local charities and organizations—including the Antioch Open Arms Mission, PM&L Theater, Antioch Historical Society, and the Antioch Area Healthcare Accessibility Alliance—will share the second half of the funds. Village and fire district leaders emphasized that the money will be used to support emergency medical services provided by the Antioch Fire Department. Both boards are expected to release more details about how the funds will be allocated in the coming weeks. "We truly appreciate the intent behind this donation," said Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon. "It helps ensure that the fire department can continue delivering essential EMS services to our community." The rescue squad's dissolution came after years of controversy. In May 2013, the village terminated its contract with the squad and shifted ambulance services to the fire department. The squad continued serving township residents for another year before the fire protection district also ended its agreement in May 2014. The decision was made to consolidate all fire and rescue services under one agency. Today, the Antioch Fire Department handles both fire and rescue operations in the village and township. It is funded and overseen by the village, township, and the First Fire Protection District. After losing its contract, the rescue squad donated its ambulances and equipment to departments outside the Antioch area. This move upset local fire officials, who argued that much of the equipment had been purchased using funds raised by the community it served. In a statement, the rescue squad’s leadership expressed their commitment to community service. "Throughout its 75-year history, the Antioch Rescue Squad has been driven by a spirit of giving," the statement read. "We believe this distribution of funds will have a lasting positive impact on the people of Antioch for years to come."
