Pump manufacturing is one of the most traditional advantageous industries in Taizhou. After more than 30 years of development, Taizhou has become the largest pump production base in the country. Among them, submersible pumps, screw pumps, and household pumps account for 3/4 of the domestic market share. Under the background of weakening world economic growth momentum and the domestic economy entering a new normal, factors such as prominent resource elements, rising production costs, and fierce competition at home and abroad have brought unprecedented pressure to the production and operation of Taizhou pump manufacturing companies.

Recently, in order to have a deeper understanding of the labor conditions of the traditional manufacturing industry in the city, the municipal Bureau of Statistics collected 86 companies as samples from 121 pump manufacturers above designated size in the city. At the same time, the reporter also visited several companies in Wenling, Daxi, and asked entrepreneurs to talk about the current employment situation and production development prospects of pump manufacturers.

In Taizhou, the pump industry has more than 3,000 companies, large and small, and employs nearly 80,000 people. Wenling is currently the main manufacturing and export base for domestic small-scale water pumps, air pumps (micro-air compressors) and vacuum pumps, and its pump and motor products have a market share of over 60% in the country.

Among the surveyed enterprises in the city, 88.1% of the employed people were between 20 and 300, and 11.9% were over 300. However, the frequent movement of employees in the company has become more and more obvious.

Taizhou Haobei Pumps Co., Ltd., which has more than 300 employees, had a turnover rate of about 10% in the past. Last year, the company's employee turnover rate reached 30%.

The company's general manager, Guan Mincheng, said that the company’s employees use external models, from managerial talents to ordinary employees, because the company’s production scale is relatively large, and management personnel are relatively good candidates. On the contrary, grass-roots employees in the workshop are difficult to recruit.

The survey shows that there is a certain gap in the employment of the pump manufacturing companies in the city, but overall, the gap is small. 84.5% of the surveyed enterprises did not have a shortage of employment, and only 7.1%, 7.1%, and 10.7% of skilled workers, managers, and first-line workers were in short supply.

The results of this survey have also been recognized by Guan Mincheng: “Although there are many employees, the pump manufacturing industry is generally in a long-term recruitment situation. If you go one by one, you can quickly recruit new people, and there is not much difficulty in recruitment.”

Daxi Town and Zeguo Town are the central towns of Zhejiang Province, and they have concentrated nearly 80% of the pump manufacturing enterprises in the city. From this year until 2017, there will be smart water pump manufacturing centers, growing water pump business incubators, and water pump (accessories) trading centers.

In recent years, the city has introduced a number of talent introduction policies. In the second half of last year, the city introduced more than 20 talent introduction policies. Five or six years ago, Zhang Qifu gave up the family-style management model and adopted a mode of external employment from management to technicians to grassroots workers.

Zhang Qifu believes that the concept of entrepreneurs plays a decisive role in the development of a company. “If the scale of a company is bigger, management and quality must keep pace. If this time, it also insists on a family-style management model, which is not professional enough.” The company's management is conducive to the further development of the company in production and management."

More and more high-quality entrepreneurs with modern corporate management concepts, brand management awareness, modern marketing awareness and innovation awareness are rising, improving the ability and level of leading enterprises in transformation and upgrading, and promoting the transformation of enterprise management from traditional to modern.

In the survey, most pump manufacturers stated that they did not consider machine substitution. However, most of them agree that machine substitutions promote the automation of the production process and are the advanced view of industrial development in the future.

Zhang Qifu’s companies also have some production lines that are mechanized, like an automatic thread-opening machine, capable of reaching the workload of seven to eight workers. However, the company did not plan to replace large-scale machines for the time being. However, Zhang Qifu also said that the "steps" of machine-manufacturing companies for pump manufacturers are just a matter of recent years, and traditional manufacturing industries also need to keep pace with the times.
