Cicero (IL) 2nd Alarm fire 2-12-11

A 2-11 alarm fire broke out in Cicero on Saturday afternoon, starting in one of the second-floor apartments and spreading through the wooden flooring that ran beneath all the units. The incident occurred at 5927 W. 35th Street, where a two-story building housed retail stores on the ground floor and multiple apartment units above. Firefighters arrived quickly and found the fire had spread laterally through the floor, making it challenging to access and control. The fire was reported in one of the upper-level units and quickly extended into the wooden subflooring, which was built over a concrete base. Due to the difficulty in reaching the fire, a Box Alarm was called for mutual aid almost immediately. The alarm was later upgraded to a 2nd Alarm as the situation grew more complex. Fire departments from Stickney, Berwyn, North Riverside, Oak Park, Forest Park, Lyons, and Bedford Park responded, bringing additional resources and personnel to the scene. Firefighters used multiple saws to remove sections of the flooring in the apartments, allowing them to reach the source of the fire and extinguish it. Fortunately, all residents were able to evacuate safely, though two firefighters from Cicero suffered minor injuries during the operation. Larry Shapiro captured several powerful images of the event, including shots of the fire spreading under the floors and firefighters working in smoky conditions. One photo shows the smoke-filled second-floor balcony where Lyons firefighters were seen. Another image highlights a Cicero firefighter taking a moment for fresh air after working inside a smoke-choked apartment. Oak Park Engine 603 arrived with one of their new 2010 HME Ahrens Fox pumpers, while other units, including Stickney Engine 1201, provided critical support. All four of Cicero’s E-ONE units were visible on 35th Street, showing the scale of the response. According to officials, the fire is believed to have originated in one of the upstairs apartments. While no suspicious activity has been identified so far, investigators will continue their work on Sunday. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro documented the fire, and Larry Shapiro has a full gallery of photos available [here](#). The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times both covered the incident, with the latter noting that the fire started around 1:30 p.m. and was raised to a 2-11 alarm.
