Independent Innovation Series Report: Innovation is the Driving Force for BASF's Sustainable Development

In developed countries, 80% of scientific research is completed in large companies, and a large number of technological patents are also owned by companies. This stems from the deep understanding of the big companies in the market competition—the continuous innovation of products and technology is the driving force for the sustainable development of the company. The famous chemical company BASF, which has gone through 140 years, has more successful experience in technological innovation. Stefan, Executive Director and Executive Director of R&D, BASF
Dr. Marcinowski accepted an interview with this reporter a few days ago.
Investing 1 billion euros per year in R&D According to Dr. Stefan Marcinowski, BASF now spends about 1 billion euros on R&D each year, which already accounts for 3% of annual sales, and 80% of the R&D budget is provided directly by the business units. These R&D projects are directly related to the development strategies of various business departments. Therefore, the selection of R&D projects is also determined by the strategies implemented by the business units in each region. The remaining 20% of the R&D funds provided by the company are used to develop new technologies or new products for BASF's areas not yet involved, and therefore it is more like an expedition. If the project proves to be effective and feasible, these projects will be funded and implemented by various business departments. The results of the research and development will be put on the market as soon as possible. For example, BASF pioneered the establishment of a commercial process for the use of ionic liquids and has marketed ionic liquids and monolithic processes under the BASIONICS and BASIL trade names respectively.
Three pillars lay the innovation strategy BASF stressed that the purpose of implementing innovation is to enhance the competitive advantage of the company in the market through cost advantages, market trends, and opportunities brought by science and technology. BASF's innovation strategy is based on three pillars: innovative processes, innovative products and innovative system solutions.
In order to increase its competitive advantage, BASF has always been committed to improving the production process while increasing its efficiency and reducing the use of resources. For example, a new technology developed by BASF for the production of THF (tetrahydrofuran) has been put into use for the first time in the Shanghai Yu Chemical Industry Park. In this process, butane extracted from natural gas will be used as a raw material for the production of THF. This innovative process saves the production of 1,4-butanediol, the previous intermediate production step, and enhances BASF's competitiveness in this field.
In terms of crop protection, the role of product innovation is crucial. Boscalid is a new bactericide produced by BASF. It is characterized by a broad spectrum, a wide range of applications, and plays a key role in the fight against fungal diseases. This bactericide can be used alone or in combination with other excellent bactericides. It is mainly used for crops such as fruits, vegetables, and vine plants as well as field crops such as rape and cereals.
Developing system solutions is another magic weapon that BASF has won from customers. Only through close cooperation with customers can we understand the current and future needs of our customers. And innovative solutions come from technology integration with customers and partners. For example, BASF and Adidas have teamed up to develop innovative sports shoes. The special part of this sports shoe is its honeycomb structure sole, which contains BASF as its special polyurethane.
Innovation depends on the knowledge network BASF believes that innovation is a fusion of competence and creativity and therefore requires a wide range of knowledge networks. With this network, BASF’s R&D capabilities are developed internally, and its creativity is motivated by external partners. BASF employs about 6,800 people worldwide in R&D activities. The core of global R&D is at three central R&D platforms in Ludwigshafen, Germany, where chemicals and engineering, specialty chemicals and polymers are studied. This core is BASF’s knowledge base because it has a strong global R&D network, including regional R&D centers, universities, research institutes, and partners from industry and emerging companies. BASF currently uses 10% of its R&D budget for cooperation with external partners and currently has more than 1,200 research cooperation projects.
Strengthen Cooperation with Chinese Academia With the development of China's economy, BASF's investment in China continues to increase, and China's global strategic position at BASF continues to increase. As early as May 1997, BASF established a BASF Sino-German R&D Fund with a contribution of RMB 30 million to support the R&D activities of universities and research institutes. By 2004, the fund has sponsored 44 research projects with a total investment of more than 1.75 million U.S. dollars, covering many areas such as polymer materials science, organic compounds, industrial catalyst research, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. In addition, nearly 1,100 graduate and undergraduate students have received funding from BASF’s scholarships in 10 universities. BASF stressed that the Sino-German research and development fund is a long-term investment, they will continue to provide support for existing projects, pay close attention to the emerging technology areas, and strengthen cooperation with the Chinese academic community.

Radial Drilling

A radial drill machine is a special purpose Drilling Machine. It normally has a drilling head that is mounted to slide along the radial arm. This radial arm can be raised, lowered, or rotated, on a vertical pole in order to adjust the position of the drill above the work piece.
