Firefighters work at the scene of a fire in a three-story residential building on the corner of West 21st Street and South Wolcott Avenue in Pilsen on Sunday.

An intense fire that broke out early Sunday morning in Pilsen sent 21 residents fleeing from their homes, according to local authorities.

The blaze was first reported around 1:40 a.m. at a three-story residential building located at 1900 W. 21st St., officials said. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames spreading across all three floors of the stairwell, as reported by Assistant Deputy Commissioner Mark Nielsen of the Chicago Fire Department.

Several residents were rescued by firefighters, while a worker from a nearby factory used a forklift to assist a man in jumping from a second-floor window, according to both fire officials and eyewitnesses.

Although the main fire was contained to the third floor, it reached the cockloft, allowing the flames to spread to an adjacent apartment building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no casualties have been reported so far.
