Firefighters work at the scene of a fire in a three-story residential building on the corner of West 21st Street and South Wolcott Avenue in Pilsen on Sunday.

An intense fire that broke out early Sunday morning in the Pilsen neighborhood left 21 residents displaced, according to local officials.

The Chicago Fire Department was called around 1:40 a.m. to a three-story residential building located at 1900 W. 21st St. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames spreading across all three floors of the building’s stairwell, as reported by Assistant Deputy Commissioner Mark Nielsen of the Chicago Fire Department.

Several residents were evacuated from the burning structure, with some requiring direct assistance from firefighters. In a remarkable act of bravery, a worker from a nearby factory used a forklift to help a man escape from a second-floor window, according to both fire officials and eyewitnesses.

While the main fire was contained to the third floor, it managed to reach the cockloft — the space between the roof and the top floor — allowing the flames to spread to an adjacent apartment building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no injuries have been reported so far.
