Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune: On a cold Thursday morning, the memory of Firefighter/Paramedic Patrick King and Firefighter Anthony Lockhart was honored at the very location where they lost their lives on February 11, 1998. The two firefighters were killed when the roof of the Beverly Tire Store collapsed during a fire. Today, the site is a peaceful park named in their honor, and it was here that the King Lockhart Memorial Statue was unveiled on a bitterly cold day. Gina King, Patrick’s widow, still carries a necklace with a small replica of her husband’s badge, number 1407. “It feels like it happened last month,†she said. “They say time heals all wounds, but that’s not true.†Her thoughts often return to that night at 10615 S. Western Ave., a place now transformed into a tribute to bravery and sacrifice. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago spoke about the significance of the park and statue. “These are reminders that even with the best training and equipment, things can go wrong. This is a dangerous job, and we always hope everyone goes home safely. It doesn’t always happen,†he said. He added that while many described the fire as routine, those in the fire service know there’s nothing truly routine about their work. “There are many places in this city where firefighters have died. This one is special because it became a park.†The park features walking paths, benches, and bronze boots marking the exact spots where each man’s body was found. The statue, created by sculptor Marshall Svendsen, stands as a powerful symbol of selflessness. “This isn’t about them—it’s about others,†said Rev.
