How To Read Your Glasses Prescription

When it comes to ordering your next pair of glasses, whether from David Kind or another brand, one of the most important steps is making sure your eyeglass prescription is up to date. Understanding your own prescription can give you more control over your vision and help you track changes in your eyes over time. At first glance, a prescription might seem confusing, but learning how to read it can be incredibly helpful. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key parts of an eyeglass prescription and what they mean.

Nearsighted

Also known as Myopia, nearsightedness means that close objects appear clear while distant ones are blurry. If you're myopic, your prescription will have a number with a minus sign in the sphere column. This number represents the lens power needed to correct your vision, measured in diopters.

Farsighted

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is when nearby objects look blurry, but things in the distance are clearer. If you’re hyperopic, your prescription will show a number with a plus sign in the sphere column. This helps adjust for the way light focuses on your retina.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the front surface of the eye isn't perfectly curved, leading to blurred or distorted vision, headaches, and eye strain. If you have astigmatism, your prescription will include two numbers: one in the cylinder column and another in the axis column. The cylinder indicates the degree of correction needed, while the axis shows the direction of the curve.

Bifocal & Progressive Lenses

If your prescription includes an ADD value, it means you need multifocal lenses. These are typically recommended starting in your 40s, though there are exceptions. Bifocals correct for both distance and reading, while progressive lenses offer a smooth transition between distance, intermediate, and near vision—all in one lens.

So, how often should you get an eye exam? It's generally recommended to have a comprehensive eye check-up every one to two years. As your vision changes, you may find yourself adjusting your habits—like holding books closer or squinting to see better. Headaches and eye fatigue are also signs that your prescription might be outdated. If you notice any changes in your vision, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your optometrist.

While new prescriptions are usually updated every 1–2 years, high-quality frames like those from David Kind can last for many years. If you already have a great pair of frames and only need new lenses, you can easily update them.
