· 25% of new car plastics from recycled materials from 2025

According to foreign media reports, Volvo Car said that since 2025, at least 25% of the plastic used in its new car comes from recycled materials. This anti-pollution plan has been praised by the United Nations.
Volvo Sustainability Director Stuart Templar said that the use of recycled plastic products, such as those from fishing nets, car dashboards, old bottles and carpets, does not affect vehicle safety or driving quality. “We think this is commercially significant,” he said. Many large companies are designing recyclable products to reduce pollution. Volvo is taking this step further and plans to use more recycled materials on its automotive production lines.
Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement, "Volvo Cars is working to reduce the negative impact on the global environment." In addition, according to Volvo, the company is working with plastics producers. Conduct negotiations to achieve its goal of “at least 25% of each new Volvo car from recycled materials from 2025”. Volvo sold 570,000 vehicles last year, about 5% of which came from recycled materials.
To prove the feasibility of the plan, Volvo previously released a test model of the XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid SUV in Gothenburg, Sweden. The test model looks exactly the same as the current model, but some of the plastic parts are made from recycled materials. For example, the fibers in the car carpet are from PET plastic bottles, the sound absorbing material under the hood is from the old Volvo car seat, and the fishing net and rope are used between the passenger and the driver's seat.
According to Erik Solheim, head of the United Nations Environment Programme, “As far as we know, this is the first attempt to use waste as a source of new vehicle raw materials. We need to be clear that plastic waste is starting to become more valuable, converting plastic waste into new raw materials. The process will also be advanced."
Volvo announced in 2017 that it plans to fully implement vehicle electrification from 2019. Last month the company said that by 2025, pure electric vehicles will account for half of its global sales. Volvo Cars also urges automotive industry suppliers to work more closely with automakers to develop more recyclable components, especially in the field of renewable plastics.
