AutoCAD Civil 3D Updates Enhance Interoperability between Autodesk and Bentley Solutions

While I was away on sabbatical this summer, the dedicated team behind AutoCAD Civil 3D was hard at work finalizing two significant updates: AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1. Both of these updates are available in all the languages supported by AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016.

To explain these advancements, it helps to break them down into two main areas: **Enhanced MicroStation .DGN Interoperability** Over the last five years, both Autodesk and Bentley have worked diligently to enhance the ability to translate drawings between .DWG and .DGN formats. With AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 SP1, we’ve introduced several subtle but highly valuable improvements aimed at ensuring visual fidelity. Our goal is to make AutoCAD Civil 3D-generated .DGN files appear identical to those created natively in MicroStation. We’ve made significant strides in how linetypes are displayed within AutoCAD Civil 3D: - Fixed-length linetypes (like those used for road striping) are now fully supported. - 3D polylines can now display complex linetypes, whereas previously they only showed continuous lines. - Improvements to the Export AutoCAD Civil 3D Drawing utility ensure that exported .DGN files maintain visual consistency when opened in MicroStation. These enhancements align with initiatives like the one in Ohio, where the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) began accepting deliverables created in AutoCAD Civil 3D back in October 2012. To support this, Autodesk developed a State Kit that allows users to adhere to ODOT standards while using AutoCAD Civil 3D. **Key Features of the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1** The second part of the story involves improved data sharing and accessibility between AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bentley InRoads and GEOPAK. AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1 includes an updated version of the Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator, a cloud-based service that facilitates file conversion between Autodesk and Bentley civil design software. - Export Civil 3D model objects into corresponding Bentley GEOPAK and InRoads data files. - Import Bentley GEOPAK and InRoads data files into AutoCAD Civil 3D model objects. Since its launch last fall, this service has proven incredibly popular, and we continue to refine it based on user feedback. **Additional Value for AutoCAD Civil 3D Users** Previously exclusive to Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite subscribers, three new modules—Autodesk River and Flood Analysis Module, Autodesk Bridge Module, and Autodesk Geotechnical Module—are now available with AutoCAD Civil 3D Subscription. These modules expand the capabilities of AutoCAD Civil 3D models, improving project delivery by allowing civil engineers to tackle more aspects of a project directly within the software. Connected workflows that integrate multiple engineering disciplines further enhance productivity. Currently, these modules are only available in English. **Next Steps** 1. Check out my podcast discussing the major improvements. 2. Download and install **AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Service Pack 1** from the Autodesk Knowledge Network. Besides the .DGN enhancements, you'll discover additional features that will enrich your overall AutoCAD Civil 3D experience. 3. To access AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1, log into your Autodesk Account page using your credentials. This pack is available to active AutoCAD Civil 3D, Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite Premium, and Ultimate subscribers. As always, we’re committed to making AutoCAD Civil 3D the best it can be, and these updates reflect our dedication to innovation and collaboration across platforms.
