Tanker rollover with Hazmat in Des Plaines, 5-8-19
This morning, emergency services in Des Plaines were dispatched to Elmhurst Road (Route 83), where it crosses over I-90, following a report of a tanker that had overturned. Unfortunately, the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Local firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and successfully extricated the driver, who was then rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
The tanker, which was carrying ethanol, had sustained multiple ruptures in its structure, leading to significant leakage onto the road surface. In response, specialized hazmat teams and the Foam Task Force from O’Hare were immediately deployed to the location to manage and contain the hazardous situation. Their efforts included plugging the leaks in the tanker, a critical step to prevent further environmental damage or risk to public safety.
Once the leaks were under control, the airport’s ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) team intervened by applying foam to the affected area to neutralize any remaining risks. Following this, various firefighting units stayed on-site, prepared to assist with the lengthy process of bringing in a private cleanup crew and arranging for another tanker to safely transfer the remaining chemical contents.
