Toyota Considers Truck Production Changes – Tundra HD?

For the second time this year, a senior Toyota executive has once again highlighted the necessity of rethinking their truck production strategy. As demand from dealerships continues to grow, so does the consumer appetite for more Tundra configurations and powertrain choices. Toyota is clearly facing pressure to adapt to these changing market conditions.

Toyota Considers Truck Production Changes - Tundra HD?

The current production line for both the Tundra and Tacoma is under significant strain. With plans to introduce new, yet-to-be-announced Tundra models, there's speculation about whether Tacoma production might shift again.

It has been several years since Toyota consolidated the manufacturing of the Tacoma and Tundra at their single facility in San Antonio, Texas. However, this arrangement may soon reach its limits. Bill Fay, the general manager of the Toyota division, recently shared with Autonews.com that dealers are reporting they could sell even more Tacomas and Tundras. He also mentioned that Toyota is actively assessing their production footprint and capacity to address these demands.

Fay elaborated that the San Antonio plant currently operates at full capacity, producing around 250,000 vehicles annually through two shifts, extended overtime, and weekend work. Even with these measures, Fay noted that adding more than approximately 7,000 extra units per year would be challenging without major changes. Given the ongoing rise in pickup truck sales, this additional capacity might not be sufficient to meet future demand.

Toyota does have another plant in Tijuana, Mexico, which manufactures roughly 50,000 Tacoma trucks each year. However, the majority of these vehicles are sold within Mexico and Canada, leaving little room for redistribution to fulfill U.S. market needs.

Clearly, Toyota faces a pressing challenge if they aim to satisfy the growing demand for their trucks. One major obstacle is the limited production capacity, which explains why Toyota offers relatively few configuration and powertrain options. Mike Sweers, the chief engineer of Toyota, acknowledged in a July 2013 USA Today interview that while they are constantly exploring new possibilities, capacity constraints remain a key issue. Sweers also mentioned at the time that pre-orders for the new models were strong, and hinted at undisclosed additional variants that could further boost demand.

These potential new variants might include a revamped Rock Warrior package (which was discontinued in 2013 but rumored to be in development), a heavy-duty model (possibly a 1/2-ton HD or heavy half-ton), and alternative powertrain options like the much-discussed diesel engine. These ideas were initially floated back in 2007 before the economic downturn hit, but now, with truck sales nearing the 2 million annual mark, the business case for introducing such models has never been stronger.

In conclusion, it appears highly probable that Toyota intends to expand the range of Tundra offerings. The critical question remains where these new models will be produced. Solving the capacity issue could open the door for a whole new generation of innovative truck designs.
