2-Alarm fire in St. Charles, 1-5-14

This message is from John Tulipano:

At approximately 05:40 on January 5th, St. Charles Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the building at 828 S. 3rd Street. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in the basement. A box alarm was initially called, followed by a second alarm as the situation escalated rapidly.

The building collapsed before I arrived on scene, forcing firefighters into a defensive position. When I got there, we were using one ladder pipe, one deck gun, and seven handlines to contain the fire and protect surrounding structures.
