With the 12-lead system, abnormal ECG readings that signal a blocked coronary artery can be transmitted in real time to Franciscan St. James Health. This allows the hospital’s emergency department and cardiac catheterization lab to prepare for the patient’s arrival while they’re still en route. The faster patients with STEMI receive treatment, the better their chances of recovery, according to the release. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 400,000 people in the U.S. suffer from STEMI each year. Research has shown that using 12-lead ECGs before hospital arrival significantly reduces "door-to-balloon" time—the time it takes to open a blocked artery. Recent studies suggest this benefit is greatest when the cath lab is activated while the patient is still being transported, as noted by Franciscan Alliance. Dr. Daniel Netluch, chief medical officer at Franciscan St. James, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Our goal is to cut down the time it takes to get patients to treatment.
