Autodesk to Acquire The Wild, Extended Reality (XR) Solutions Provider for Immersive and Collaborative Workspaces for Design and Construction

San Francisco – March 24, 2022 – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has announced a strategic move by signing a definitive agreement to acquire The Wild, a cloud-connected extended reality (XR) platform that includes its flagship solutions, The Wild and IrisVR. This acquisition marks a significant step in the company's journey toward integrating immersive technologies into the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

The Wild empowers AEC professionals with tools to present, collaborate, and review projects through immersive and interactive experiences, no matter where they are. This aligns perfectly with Autodesk's vision of enhancing project delivery with advanced AR and VR capabilities, offering more efficient and collaborative workflows for customers across the globe.

The Wild serves over 700 global customers through its platforms, providing affordable and on-demand solutions that enhance team collaboration. With an increasing number of remote workforces, the virtual format allows for real-time ideation and decision-making, making it an essential tool in today’s evolving work environment.

Andrew Anagnost, CEO and president of Autodesk, said, “The rapid transformation in the building industry, from complex projects to diverse teams, highlights the importance of XR as a business imperative. This acquisition is a key part of our Forge platform vision.”

The Wild’s virtual platform enables teams to explore, interact, and modify digital project models directly in the cloud. This leads to faster decisions and better outcomes at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional in-person methods.

Gabe Paez, founder and CEO of The Wild, added, “Our shared mission with Autodesk is to foster a more productive and collaborative AEC industry. The Wild allows teams to resolve issues quickly from their desks, reducing costly travel and improving efficiency.”

Black & Veatch, a global leader in engineering and construction, uses The Wild’s IrisVR and Autodesk solutions to connect project professionals, clients, and partners through enhanced collaboration. This approach improves engagement, safety, and overall project understanding, leading to better outcomes.

Brian Melton, Technology Innovation Lead at Black & Veatch, said, “As remote collaboration becomes the norm, systems like Autodesk Construction Cloud and The Wild’s IrisVR enable us to deliver world-class projects regardless of location. This immersive experience is a game-changer for our teams.”

Why XR Now?

Nic Fonta, General Manager of XR at Autodesk, explained, “The convergence of events—accessibility, affordability, and the future of digital twins and the metaverse—makes this the right time for Autodesk’s acquisition of The Wild.”

  • Resiliency: The global pandemic has increased the need for remote collaboration. XR solutions help keep teams together and projects moving, even with physical distancing and travel restrictions.
  • Accessibility and Affordability: VR and AR equipment has become more affordable, with headsets costing a few hundred dollars instead of thousands. Most smartphones now support AR, making XR accessible to anyone, anywhere.
  • Sustainability: In-person collaboration often leads to unnecessary travel and carbon emissions. Cloud-based collaboration saves time, money, and materials while promoting sustainability.

The Wild and IrisVR integrate data from various AEC technologies to support design reviews and model coordination. These integrations include Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, Navisworks, as well as other non-Autodesk platforms like Rhinoceros and Trimble SketchUp.
