Barrington MABAS 2nd Alarm 7-19-11

Last night, just before 9 PM, the Barrington Fire Department received multiple calls about a structure fire at a vacant house under renovation on #7 Crestview Lane in Lake Barrington. Upon arrival, responding units from Barrington Station 3 encountered heavy flames engulfing the building. It was later confirmed that the residence had been unoccupied and was in the midst of renovations. Lake Zurich Engine 2 (3214), which is stationed approximately two miles away, quickly arrived after Barrington's initial response. They positioned themselves strategically and set up a relay pumping operation, ensuring a continuous water supply. This setup was later supplemented by a tanker shuttle that sourced water from a portable tank placed at the intersection of Crestview Lane and Old Barrington Road. Seven tanker trucks were dispatched to the scene, and the fire was brought under control within an hour. Despite the late hour, temperatures remained relatively high, hovering around the low 80s with high humidity levels adding to the challenge. Mutual aid was provided by departments from Hoffman Estates, Carpentersville, Mundelein, Cary, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Long Grove, Bartlett, Wauconda, Algonquin-Lake In The Hills, and Deerfield. Photographer Larry Shapiro captured several images after the fire was extinguished, offering a glimpse into the aftermath and the staging area. His photos reveal the efforts of various departments, including Mundelein Fire Department’s Engine 431, which was positioned on Old Barrington Road, and Hoffman Estates Fire Department’s Engine 23, which remained on standby. Additionally, Carpentersville Engine 942, a 2007 Pierce Dash, and Cary’s Squad 255 were also part of the response effort. Shapiro’s photographs highlight the coordination between different teams, showing how Barrington Engine 361 played a crucial role in drafting water from the portable tank, which was then transported down Crestview Lane to support Lake Zurich Engine 2. West Dundee firefighters also contributed with their Pierce Saber apparatus, standing ready in staging areas several blocks away. The firefighting operation involved not only local departments but also mutual aid resources from neighboring towns, demonstrating the importance of regional cooperation in emergency situations. Despite the challenges posed by the weather conditions, all involved worked diligently to ensure the situation was handled efficiently. For those interested in more details, The Daily Herald has published a brief article that provides further insights into the incident. It’s always impressive to see how these teams come together when needed, showcasing their dedication and preparedness.
