Code 4 fire in Glencoe, 4-30-15

At around 3 p.m., I received a call to respond to a construction site located at 328 Tudor Court due to a fire on the roof. When we arrived, it was clear that the situation was escalating quickly. Several pallets loaded with styrofoam were ablaze, creating a massive plume of smoke that billowed into the air. The sight was both alarming and impressive in its intensity. Northfield and Winnetka had already positioned their ladders on the roof and were working with handlines to tackle the flames. Meanwhile, Glencoe and Northfield secured hydrants to ensure we had a steady water supply. Interestingly, Wilmette brought down their hose and prepared a hydrant but didn't end up using it for water supply. Highwood and Highland Park also joined the effort, contributing their resources and manpower to the operation. A construction worker who was present at the site was transported by Glenview Ambulance 6 to Highland Park Hospital as a precautionary measure. As the fire raged on, firefighters from various departments worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control. It was a challenging scene, with heavy smoke obstructing visibility and making the task even more difficult. The images captured by Larry Shapiro truly encapsulate the intensity of the situation. One of the most striking moments was seeing the Pierce Saber fire engine at the scene, ready to assist in any way possible. The Smeal Quint and E-ONE e-MAX engines were also instrumental in managing the blaze. Firefighters could be seen pulling out hoses and maneuvering through the thick smoke, their efforts evident in every photograph. The aerial ladder was deployed, allowing firefighters to reach higher areas of the roof where the flames were particularly intense. It was a testament to their skill and teamwork that they managed to contain the fire before it spread further. Even after the immediate threat was mitigated, firefighters remained on-site to ensure everything was secure and prevent any rekindling. The entire operation was a coordinated effort between multiple departments, each bringing their unique capabilities to the table. As the sun began to set, the exhausted but proud firefighters gathered for a moment of reflection, knowing they had successfully prevented what could have been a much larger disaster. For those interested in more visuals, additional photos can be found on shapirophotography.net. It was an unforgettable experience, one that highlighted the dedication and bravery of our local firefighting teams.
