The Fifth of Sweet Potato Fertilizer Series: Integrated Techniques for High-yield, Non-pollution, Optimized Fertilization of Sweet Potato

The Fifth in the Sweet Potato Fertilizer Series: Integrated Techniques for High-Yield, Non-Polluting, and Optimized Fertilization of Sweet Potatoes

Based on years of experimental research and practical production, we have developed a high-yield, pollution-free, and optimized fertilization technology model that can produce 3,000 to 4,000 kilograms of fresh sweet potatoes per mu. This comprehensive approach combines organic, inorganic, and biotechnological methods to ensure sustainable and efficient growth.

1. Combining Organic, Inorganic, and Biotechnology for Base Fertilization. Although sweet potatoes are known for their ability to thrive in poor soil, they have a long growing season and require significant nutrients. Therefore, it's essential to apply base fertilizer to unlock their full yield potential. Soil testing is crucial before applying fertilizers. For soils with fertility above average—more than 1% organic matter, over 0.05% available nitrogen, more than 20 ppm available phosphorus, and over 100 ppm available potassium—it's recommended to use 3,000–4,000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure combined with 2–3 kg of biological fertilizer containing more than 200 million bacteria per gram. Additionally, 30 kg of high-quality NPK compound fertilizer with over 15% nutrient content should be added. If farmyard manure is unavailable, you can substitute with Granville brand fulvic acid to activate phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, using 50–60 kg per mu. Apply this base fertilizer during site preparation, adjusting the amount based on soil test results. Since sweet potato roots grow mainly in the 25–30 cm layer, it's important to apply the fertilizer at that depth for better root absorption. Using furrow planting methods helps deepen the plough layer, improving overall soil structure and root development.

2. Skillful Application of Topdressing to Supplement Nutrients and Promote Healthy Growth. After the initial base fertilizer, topdressing should be applied during the early stage of tuber expansion. It’s best to follow the principle of “supplementing what is lacking.” Typically, 7.5–10 kg of Amino Acid Chelated NPK Compound Fertilizer or 2–3 kg of Dihydrogen Phosphate Potassium fertilizer is recommended. The application method can be through acupuncture or dissolving in water and watering the roots. Each application should be around 0.25–0.5 kg per area to ensure even distribution and effective nutrient uptake.

3. Scientific Use of Foliar Fertilizers to Balance Nutrition and Coordinate Growth. Using advanced foliar fertilizers helps balance nutrition, stimulate plant vitality, improve stress resistance, and support both vegetative and reproductive growth. During the entire growth period, it’s advisable to spray Lei Li 2000 functional compound liquid fertilizer 3–4 times. Mix 30 bags of 30-gram powder with 30 kg of water per mu, which can increase yields by 20–30%. Alternatively, Laoxiang brand high-efficiency biological liquid fertilizer can be used, sprayed 3 times throughout the growing season. Each application involves 1 bag (25 grams) mixed with 15 kg of water, sprayed directly onto the stems and leaves. This method can also boost production by approximately 30%.
