John D. "Buddha" "Schultzy" Schultz Jr., 49, of Geneva, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at Delnor Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on September 15, 1970, in St. Charles, the son of John Sr. and Nancy (DeVries) Schultz.
A dedicated firefighter for both the Downers Grove and Geneva Fire Departments, John was known for his passion for service, his love for football, and his deep appreciation for history and Star Wars. He spent countless hours watching METV and cherished family time above all else. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his children: Mia, Ian, and Owen; his children’s mother, Becky (Niemiec) Schultz; his sister Barbara (Tim) Estes of Bristol; his niece Lindsey Wojcik of Earlville; and many other cherished relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 11:00 am at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church.
John had a long and meaningful career in the fire service, serving with distinction for over two decades. He worked with the Carol Stream Fire Protection District from 1994 to 2000, then joined the Geneva Fire Department where he began his journey in emergency services. Later, he served as a Lieutenant with the Downers Grove Fire Department from 2000 to 2013, playing an active role in the union, including the Executive Board and negotiations committee. He was also a proud member of the AFFI Honor Guard and was recognized for his leadership in EMS, serving as the Designated Infection Control Officer and EMS Coordinator.
In addition to his work with the fire departments, John was an instructor at the Downers Grove Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy, and even taught at the College of DuPage. His dedication to training and education left a lasting impact on many aspiring firefighters.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help support John’s family with funeral expenses during this difficult time. Your generosity would mean a great deal to them as they navigate this loss and the financial challenges that come with it.
John's life was a testament to service, love, and commitment—qualities that defined him both professionally and personally. He will be remembered not only for his work but for the warmth and kindness he brought to everyone around him.
