John D. Schultz Obituary John D. “Buddha†“Schultzy†Schultz Jr., 49, of Geneva, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at Delnor Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 15, 1970, in St. Charles, the son of John Sr. and Nancy (DeVries) Schultz. A devoted firefighter for both Downers Grove and Geneva, John dedicated his life to serving others with courage and compassion. A passionate fan of football, history, and Star Wars, John found joy in watching METV and spending time with his children. He was a loving father to Mia, Ian, and Owen, and cherished every moment with them. His warm personality and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him. John is survived by his children, Mia, Ian, and Owen; their mother, Becky (Niemiec) Schultz; his sister Barbara (Tim) Estes of Bristol; niece Lindsey Wojcik of Earlville; and many other cherished relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Nancy Schultz. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 11:00 am at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a local fire department or a charity of choice. A GoFundMe has been created to help support John’s family during this difficult time. John Schultz passed away on December 1st at Delnor Hospital, leaving behind three children—his 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old twin boys. John was only 49 years old and had fought a long battle with illness. His family is now facing both grief and financial hardship as they prepare to honor his life. John served as a Lieutenant with the Downers Grove Fire Department from 2000 to 2013 and was an active member of Local 3234. He also served on the Union Executive Board, the negotiations committee, and was a proud member of the Honor Guard for the AFFI. John was known for his dedication to EMS, where he worked as the Designated Infection Control Officer and EMS Coordinator. His passion for the job helped elevate the standards of the department during his tenure. Before joining Downers Grove, John worked for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District from 1994 to 2000 and spent 24 years with the Geneva Fire Department, where he began his career in the fire service. He was also an instructor at the Downers Grove Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy, and previously taught at the College of DuPage. John’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the communities he protected, and the memories he left behind. His family and friends will always remember him as a true hero, both on and off the job.
