The Color of Fire Trucks (part 11) Division 11

It’s been quite some time since we last shared an article in The Color of Fire Trucks series. This time around, we’re diving into MABAS Division 11, where we’ll focus on just one department that once operated vehicles not traditionally red. The Cicero Fire Department made some interesting purchases back in the 1970s and 1980s, including trucks that were solid white. One of their notable acquisitions during this period was a Ford/Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerial ladder, paired with a Ford/Darly top-mount engine. There was also a unique squad vehicle built on a Ford F chassis, featuring a lightweight ladder design reminiscent of those used by outdoor sign companies. Take a look at Truck 1 from Cicero, which rolled out in 1973 with its Grove aerial ladder mounted on a Ford C-Series chassis. The body for this truck was crafted by American Fire Apparatus. This image, captured by Larry Shapiro, offers a clear view of the classic setup that once graced Cicero’s streets. ![Cicero Truck 1](https://example.com/Cicero_T1_Ford-C8000_Grove-LS.jpg) *Caption: Cicero Fire Department's Truck 1 featured this 1973 100-foot rear-mounted Grove aerial ladder on a Ford C-Series chassis. Photographed shortly after its arrival, this engine stood out with its Ford C-8000 chassis, complete with a rear custom canopy cab and a top-mounted control panel. Equipped with a 1,000-gallon-per-minute (GPM) pump and carrying 500 gallons of water, it was a powerful addition to Cicero’s fleet. This image, also captured by Larry Shapiro, provides a glimpse into the design and functionality of the engine. ![Cicero Engine 3](https://example.com/Cicero_E3_Ford-C8000_Darley-TM-LS.jpg) *Caption: Cicero Fire Department's Engine 3, delivered in 1981 by the W.S. It’s always exciting to explore these historical details and understand the evolution of fire apparatus over the years. Stay tuned as we continue to uncover more stories in this captivating series!
